The horizontal axis shows time. The vertical axis follows note names in semitone steps, from low to high, with C4 marking middle C.
Notice stable notes, transitions, range, breath steadiness, and vibrato. Noise and vocal harmonics can occasionally create an octave jump, so read each result in context.
Using VocalPal
Begin recording, sing or hum, and watch the curve move with your voice. When you stop, replay the session and review the sections that were difficult to judge while singing. Zooming into a short phrase makes it easier to compare the beginning, center, and ending of each note.
Reading the graph
Each vertical step represents a semitone. Note names run from low to high, with A0 near the bottom of a piano's range and C8 near the top. C4 is middle C. A level section suggests a sustained pitch; slopes and waves can reveal slides, transitions, vibrato, or changing stability.
Reading responsibly
The voice contains a fundamental pitch and several harmonics. A strong harmonic, accompaniment, room noise, or an extremely high or low tone can occasionally produce an octave reading that does not match what you heard. Repeat the phrase in a quiet room and compare the surrounding curve before drawing a conclusion.
